RECREATIONAL PLAYER DEVELOPMENTAL PROGRAM

The Appleton Soccer Club provides the Apple Seed Academy for U5, U6, and U7 players and the Apple Core Academy for U8, U9 and U10 players.  These development programs are for boys and girls age 5 - 10.  It is designed to provide a solid technical soccer foundation for aspiring players. These programs will run for the length of the season and allow the players to work on their soccer skills over a longer period of time. The program will be conducted by skilled trainers who have years of experience both as players and coaches.  They work with the volunteer coaches of the team.

Frequently Asked Questions about the Recreational Program

A. How do I sign up my child?
After Labor Day, registration forms are available at Soccer Plus, Player Choice and Soccer Heaven. They form is also on this website.  If you have played for ASC in the past, the registration form will also be included in the September and October Soccer Shorts newsletter. Click on the pdf file above to print off a form now.

ASC accepts registrations for recreational soccer until the start of the season in May.  Late registrations are accepted on a first come, first served basis until each team in an age group is filled.  Once an age group is filled, all roster spots have been filled in the league, a waiting list is started.

B. Are there any special procedures for filling out the form?
There are several sections which ASC needs to have completed in order to process the form:
1. All of the child's information as well as their birth date. Without the birth date we can not be sure the child is being placed in the correct age division.
2. If a girl is choosing to play COED, please check the box in the middle right side of the first page to make sure she is placed there.
3. Please indicate which SCHOOL your child attends. Also circle the number of the AREA of the neighborhood map you live in.  Indicate by checking the box if you prefer to have your child play on a team with players from their school or from their neighborhood if different.

C. How are recreational teams formed by ASC?
ASC wants to provide the best possible experience for its youth players. Parents are asked to be sure to include which school your child attends on the registration form.
Age divisions U5-U8 will use this information as a starting point to put at least 2-3 players from the same school on the same team. Teams are randomly formed together by the school they attend and as a second priority the area they live in. For ages U9 through U-19 teams are formed randomly by neighborhood. As part of our charter from the start, we are not to have more than 5 players on the same recreational team from year to year. We have chosen to randomize teams as our method of complying with this rule.

D. I and a friend would like to coach together. Is this possible?
This is possible and encouraged. This is one of the valid requests listed. This request is only for adults who want to coach a team. Players can be placed on the same team if their parents would like to coach together. Please indicate in the space provided.

E. I have two children in the same age group; can they be on the same team?
Yes, in all cases ASC places siblings on the same team, including stepbrothers and sisters, if requested.

There are no other valid requests.

F. What nights are games on?
Games are played on Monday through Thursday nights. Game times are normally at 5:30 pm and 6:30 pm, however in the older age groups the time is 5:15 pm and 6:30 pm in May due to early darkness.

G. How much and when do teams practice?
This is the prerogative of the coach. When rosters are given to the coaches we encourage the coach to meet with the parents to set up a practice schedule. Normally teams practice once per week (in the evenings) in addition to the game. Prior to the season, practices may occur more often.

H. When and how will I find out what team my child is playing on?
Rosters are given to the coaches, at the annual ASC coaches meeting in late February or very early March. ASC asks coaches to contact players within 1 week of receiving the rosters, to set up a team and parent meeting.

I. What guidelines does the Appleton Soccer Club have on playing time?
In the recreational soccer division, it is the policy of the Appleton Soccer Club that all players must play a minimum of 50% of each game.

J. Why does ASC not form teams based on requests? There are a number of reasons why ASC has gone to randomized teams. Among them are:
 Fairness of competition. We have found some coaches try to "load" teams to assure a winning record. This practice resulted in many lopsided scores and discouraged many young players.
 Players who play with the same coach and players tend to become more narrow in their ability to play the game, as they almost always end up playing the same position. It is our experience as players play with different coaches and players they are exposed to more of the game.
 This presents opportunities to players (and parents) to meet new friends and develop relationships which will help each of them as they go forward into junior high and high school.
 It is hoped players and parents will take the good experiences from each team and coach to build on to assure a good experience for more and more players each year.
 As part of our charter from the state, ASC is not to have more that 5 players on the same recreational team from year to year. ASC has chosen to randomize teams as our method of complying with this rule.
